# Semantic MediaWiki 7.2.0

Released on July 17, 2026.

This is a [minor release](../RELEASE-POLICY.md). Thus, it contains no breaking changes, only new features and fixes.

Like SMW 7.1.0, this version is compatible with MediaWiki 1.43 up to 1.46 and PHP 8.1 up to 8.5.
For more detailed information, see the [compatibility matrix](../COMPATIBILITY.md#compatibility).

## New features and enhancements

* Added the `+display` option to the `#set` parser function, so a value can be stored and shown in one call without inline annotation syntax. The option follows a property assignment like `+sep` does and shows the values stored for that property, rendered the way the corresponding inline annotation would: `+display` or `+display=link` produce the linked, formatted value, `+display=text` the formatted value without a link ([#5624](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/5624))
* Added `SMW\MediaWiki\Outputs::requireJsConfigVar()` so extensions can register JavaScript configuration variables through the SMW output mechanism, alongside modules, styles and head items, instead of emitting inline scripts ([#7028](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/7028))
* Added the `` parser function for linking to a property page from running text: `` and `` render the same output as the `Foo::@@@` and `custom label` annotation syntax, providing a dedicated syntax that does not rely on intercepting `…` links ([#5624](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/5624), [#1855](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/1855))

## Security fixes

* Fixed a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in `Special:Ask` where a crafted `sep` parameter was inserted unescaped into table output ([GHSA-7xv3-gf2g-498h](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-7xv3-gf2g-498h))
* Fixed a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in `Special:Ask` where crafted query values were reflected unescaped into the `format=debug` query debug output ([GHSA-q5fm-9mx6-44f4](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-q5fm-9mx6-44f4))
* Fixed a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in `Special:Ask` where a crafted `mainlabel` or property label was reflected unescaped into plain table headers (`headers=plain`) ([GHSA-3jp5-3h47-28qf](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-3jp5-3h47-28qf))
* Fixed a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in `Special:Ask` where a crafted `cursor` pagination token was reflected unescaped into query error messages ([GHSA-cx86-7xwp-w9wf](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-cx86-7xwp-w9wf))
* Fixed a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in `Special:SearchByProperty` where crafted `property` or `value` parameters were reflected unescaped into validation error messages and the result heading ([GHSA-59xw-qv23-j3rc](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-59xw-qv23-j3rc))
* Fixed an open redirect in `Special:URIResolver` where a crafted pretty URI could redirect visitors to an external host ([GHSA-hw3m-8j5x-94ff](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-hw3m-8j5x-94ff))

## Bug fixes

* Fixed a query showing incorrect printout values when the same property is requested through different printout contexts, such as a direct and an inverse printout or the same property with different sort options ([#7026](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7026))
* Fixed maintenance scripts run with `--auto-recovery` (such as `rebuildData` and `rebuildElasticIndex`) aborting with a `FileNotWritableException` on deployments where the extension directory is not writable; the recovery checkpoint is now stored in the database instead of a `.smw.json` file, so it no longer depends on a writable `$smwgConfigFileDir` ([#7030](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/7030))
* Fixed viewing an old revision failing with a "This ParserOutput contains no text!" error on wikis running an extension that adds parser output metadata to the page, such as PageNotice ([#7033](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/7033))
* Fixed `Special:Ask` returning an internal error when a query is run with `format=debug` ([#7035](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7035))
* Fixed long-running maintenance scripts (such as `rebuildData`, `rebuildFulltextSearchTable` and `dumpRDF`) exhausting memory on large wikis; MediaWiki's buffered stats samples, which accumulate in process memory for every processed entity and have no flush point on the command line, are now flushed periodically during the rebuild loops ([#7036](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7036))
* Fixed maintenance scripts and Elasticsearch index rebuilds aborting with a `TypeError`, and faceted search returning incorrect counts, when an entity's stored sort-sequence or value-count map could not be deserialized (for example after the wiki's `$wgSecretKey` was changed); such a map is now treated as empty instead of crashing or miscounting ([#7043](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/7043))
* Fixed pages with an outdated query dependency (tracked via `$smwgEnabledQueryDependencyLinksStore`) auto-reloading immediately and repeatedly, causing a visible "flicker" loop while the underlying data had not yet caught up; the page-purge auto-reload now backs off with an increasing delay and stops after a fixed retry period, showing a low-key notice instead of reloading indefinitely ([#7046](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7046))
* Fixed a JavaScript error when rendering a property as a link on the client side; the code called `mw.util.wikiGetlink`, which has been removed from MediaWiki core, and now uses `mw.util.getUrl` ([#7047](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7047))
* Fixed Semantic MediaWiki being unusable on PostgreSQL since 7.0.0, where `update.php`, saving pages and running queries aborted with a `pg_escape_string()` error ([#7049](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/issues/7049))
* Fixed an incorrect `smw_hash` being stored when moving an entity in a non-zero namespace (such as a category or property), which could break hash-based lookups for the moved entity ([#7051](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7051))
* Fixed `Special:Ask` remote and raw requests (those using the `request_type` parameter) aborting with a fatal error on PHP 8.5 ([#7052](https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/pull/7052))

## Upgrading

No need to run "update.php" or any other migration scripts.

Wikis that set `$smwgEntityCollation` to a `uca-*` value should run `php extensions/SemanticMediaWiki/maintenance/updateEntityCollation.php` once after upgrading so that previously stored sort keys use the new, consistent encoding. Wikis using the default `identity` collation need no migration.

**Get the new version via Composer:**

* Step 1: if you are upgrading from SMW older than 7.0.0, ensure the SMW version in `composer.local.json` is `^7.2.0`
* Step 2: run composer in your MediaWiki directory: `composer update --no-dev --optimize-autoloader`

**Get the new version via Git:**

This is only for those who have installed SMW via Git.

* Step 1: do a `git pull` in the SemanticMediaWiki directory
* Step 2: run `composer update --no-dev --optimize-autoloader` in the MediaWiki directory
